Active and future Solar System Missions as of April 1st 2014 (no joke). Comet Siding Spring appears, and Hayabusa 2 will have 3 small missions piggybacking. Meanwhile, Rosetta is just over 3 million km from it's target, Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

New Mars Map

The USGS has released a new version of their Mars map based on Viking images with added topographic data from MOLA. Emily Lakdawalla had a field day with it, making some very nice images.

I made a version here with added relief shading, with the help of this map, also from MOLA, rejiggered with 0 degrees in the center. And since the original map had a bit of a blueish tint, I changed the color range somewhat, so that the icy poles appear white, giving the rest of Mars a much nicer red appearance. For my taste, anyway.

Of course, I also used that map for my Solar System Exploration History page, as the background for the Mars lander map.
